Types of Skin Cancer

Basal cell carcinoma: This is the most common form of skin cancer, and it is very curable. This type is typically found on sun-exposed areas such as the face, ears and arms. It is often flesh-toned to reddish in color and can appear as a pearly, nodular bump or a raw, ulcerated sore. These cancers begin in the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) and usually grow slowly. However, if left untreated, they can cause extensive destruction of tissue.

Squamous cell carcinoma: This is the second most common type of skin cancer. These cancers also begin in the epidermis, but are usually more aggressive and have more potential to spread internally to other organs. They may appear as a red bump or non-healing sore.

Melanoma: This is the most serious skin cancer; it begins in skin cells called melanocytes that produce skin color (melanin). This is the least common, but most aggressive skin cancer. If caught early, the cure rate is excellent, but in more advanced stages is often fatal. Melanoma usually appears as a red to black spot or bump, which may be a new lesion or a change in an existing mole. It may appear flat and smooth, or raised. Melanoma is usually treated first with surgery and may be followed by chemotherapy, radiation therapy and biologic therapy.
