Aging Skin
Just as each personality is different, so is each person’s skin and reaction to aging. The natural process of aging affects the entire body, but perhaps most visibly the body’s largest organ—the skin. The cumulative effect of years of exposure to sun, wind, harsh weather and bad habits takes its toll on skin’s elasticity and cellular construction.
Symptoms
As early as your 20s, you might begin to notice subtle changes to your skin such as fine lines, dark spots, dryness, itching, and sagging. Over time, the appearance of wrinkles, thinning skin, graying hair, splotchy dark spots and loss off a more youthful fullness are all signs of aging skin.
As we age, our skin can also become more easily bruised due to thinner blood vessel walls. The skin becomes dry and because sebaceous (oil) glands decrease in size. Wrinkles, creases, and folds form because of a loss of flexibility in the skin.
What Causes It?
Aging happens to everyone, but the rate at which changes take place is determined by many factors, including familial genes and the amount of time spent in the sun. Smoking accelerates the aging process because it reduces the blood supply to the skin, and alcohol dehydrates the skin, which can cause it to wrinkle. Repeated facial expressions such as smiling, frowning, and squinting can cause fine lines or wrinkles at a younger age.
